WHAT IS MINING?
Mining is extracting ore or minerals from the ground, ore is a high concentration of economically valuable minerals that can be mined for a profit.
4 types of surface mine
open pit: removes large near surface deposits of minerals such as gold and copper
quarries: stone crushed rock sand and gravel
strip mining: removing surface coal in strips up to 50 m wide x 1 km ling
mountain top removal: top of elevation is blown off
subsurface mining are located too deep for surface mining
shafts and passegeways are dug into the ground to reach ore

Surface mining accident
The Benxihu colliery disaster in China cost 1,549 lives and is believed to be the worst coal mining disaster ever. The tragedy occurred on 26 April 1942 in the Honkeiko coal mine, located near Benxi in the Liaoning province of China.
The fatal explosion of the underground coal mine was caused by a mixture of gas and coal dust. The underground fire exploded out of the mine shaft entrance.
The ventilation system was shut off and the pit head was sealed by the mine operator to deprive the underground of oxygen. An electric fence was erected around the pit to obstruct the entry of miner's relatives.
Sub surface mining accident
Sago Mine disaster was a coal mine explosion on January 2, 2006, in the Sago Mine in Sago, in Upshur County, West Virginia, USA, near the county seat of Buckhannon. The blast and collapse trapped 13 miners for nearly two days. One of the 13 trapped miners survived. It was the worst mining disaster in the United States since the Jim Walter Resources Mine Disaster in Alabama on September 23, 2001, and the worst disaster in West Virginia since the 1968 Farmington Mine Disaster. It was exceeded four years later by the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster, also a coal mine explosion in West Virginia, which killed 29 miners in April, 2010.
